Do you remember October 2011, when Apple unveiled Siri, its new-age personal assistant? Whether you were captivated or a little spooked, it's safe to say that Siri didn't quite live up to the full-fledged assistant role Apple envisioned.

Fast forward 12 years, and we’re witnessing in real-time how far AI has come. OpenAI has been introducing amazing new features to ChatGPT Plus users (including voice capabilities), rapidly bridging the divide between artificial intelligence and human capabilities.

The value of the $20/month Plus subscription has really skyrocketed over the last year - for those who are taking advantage of all of the new developments, of course. Today we’ll run you through ChatGPT’s new conversational voice feature, complete with practice prompts.

⚙️ ChatGPT Voice Feature Set-Up

  1. The Voice feature is available to Plus users through the ChatGPT mobile app. Download the app and login with your OpenAI credentials.

  2. Once in the app, go to Settings > New Features > opt into voice conversations

  3. Select your preferred voice (they have 5 options) by selecting the headphone button in the top-right corner of the home screen

  4. Tap the headphone button when you’re ready to start talking to ChatGPT.

  5. When you talk to ChatGPT, make sure you’re employing all of the AI prompt advice we’ve given in the past. (Find our LLM prompting advice in this previous issue of The Multidisciplined!)

🤩 4 Professional Use Cases + Prompts

ChatGPT’s Voice capability will equipping businesses in amazing, complex ways (e.g., creating Voice assistants to support customer service and sales), but some of those projects will require extra pieces and code. We want to give you 4 simple prompts that add value to your work without taking you out of the ChatGPT interface.

Copy the prompts and try today :)

  1. Interview Practice

    • Hey Chat, I have a big interview tomorrow for the Senior Marketing Manager role at StartupX. I’m uploading a file with the job description now. I want you to act as the hiring manager and conduct a mock interview with me. Keep going with the interview until I say “done.” Then, provide me with constructive feedback.

  2. Note Transcription & Organization

    • Hey Chat, I have a bunch of emails to send out today. I’ll dictate them to you now, and I want you to transcribe them for me so I can send out these emails quickly later. When you’re done, can you also organize them by recipient?"

  3. Brainstorming

    • In the abstract brainstorming phase, it’s often difficult to even put your ideas down in plain language. Talking about your ideas can be easier, and it’s even better when you have someone to bounce ideas with.

    • Hey Chat! Act as a brainstorming partner. I’ve noticed a customer retention problem with my business in the last few months, and I don’t know what the root cause is. Let me describe to you what’s happening and give you a few solution ideas I have. I want you to respond to me constructively and creatively, helping me ultimately arrive at an actionable way to solve this problem. Set temperature to 1.0.

  4. Language Translation

    • Hey Chat! I have a business presentation for a conference that I’ve written English, but I need to translate it into French and Spanish so that I can offer printout notes to the international audience. Can you assist me with the translation?

🧠 Musing of the Week

Yesterday, NYC Mayor Eric Adams unveiled the city's Artificial Intelligence Action Plan, a roadmap for how city departments should use—or not use—AI tools. According to Insider, city agencies are already using ~30 algorithmic tools spread across 12 departments. From the AI surveillance cameras tracking fare evasion on the subway, to the new chatbot answering questions on the NYC MyBusiness website, to the robot version of Mayor Adams making calls to constituents in multiple languages, AI is worming its way into city government. Because of NYC’s cultural prominence, it’s reasonable to assume that a similar program will spread to other places soon.

These programs range from slightly Orwellian to facades on old-school bureaucratic systems. Moreover, the city's increasing use of AI demands a broader consideration of algorithmic governance. These algorithms aren't impartial actors. They're built and maintained mostly by companies who are motivated by growth and shareholder satisfaction. Placing these algorithms in powerful hands does create significant risk. However, Mayor Adams perhaps rightly sees these tools as efficient fixes to growing needs and shrinking city budgets. If implemented correctly, these programs might offer the opportunity to improve our cities and the lives of the people who live in them.

Regardless of where you fall on the issue, the integration of AI into governance seems inevitable. The questions lie more in the approach we decide to take, the scale we allow, and the controls that we put on its use. We’re happy to see Mayor Adam’s government leaning into guidance and regulation fairly early in this process. Despite our misgivings about some of the ways it’s already implemented in NYC, and we hope to see other cities thinking even more deeply about the tools they choose to use.
